Golfers looking for a golf holiday usually don’t think of heading north above the Arctic Circle and I have to admit golf was not the main reason for traveling to the stunning Lofoten Islands off the coast of northern Norway. But sometimes, the unexpected is the most rewarding and we were rewarded indeed with a round of golf at a beautiful and intriguing golf course.

Lofoten is a chain of small islands that are distinguished by high mountain peaks, which provide spectacular views. The craggy rocks, often covered in mist, jut out from the clear blue north Atlantic, providing a unique landscape. Dotted with small fishing villages and rugged little farms, Lofoten is a popular tourist destination in the warm summer months.

We took a flight north from Oslo, which lasted a bit over two hours, to the port city of Bodo, just above the Arctic Circle. This city is underwent a complete rebuilding after World War II, so is quite modern, with several nice new hotels that overlook the harbor. Even in early May, the sun was still quite bright at midnight and barely dusk by 2:00 A.M.

Lofoten is accessible by the coastal ferries and it is possible to walk on a ferry in Bodo, but we opted to rent a car and drive north on the mainland, loping around to access Lofoten by a shorter ferry ride from the north. We had no problem finding a nice hotel in the fishing town of Svalvaer, where the winter catch of cod fish was still out drying in the sun on huge racks, about three stories high.

The golf course in Lofoten is about a half-hour drive from Salver. At that time of year, it is possible to play at midnight or at 4:00 A.M., and one can opt to pay for a twenty-four hour day and come back at different times, rather than the typical green fee for 9 or 18 holes. Rather than disrupt our schedule, we went at the more conventional time of mid-morning and had the course to ourselves for most of our game.

There are no power carts to rent, as they would not be of much use in climbing the narrow trails through the rocks to the elevated tees. Club rental is available and once we were suitably fixed up, we struck off. The fairways were surprisingly lush but the greens struggle a bit in the harsh climate. Many of the tee boxes were back in the rocks and many of the greens were protected by natural gorse or the ocean waves. The third hole was particularly interesting with a high elevated tee, set back in the craggy rocks, requiring a shot over the ocean or beach, depending whether the tide was in or out.

Looking out over the endless vista of the ocean and the mist covered mountains, feeling the freshness of the sea air and the sun shining through the spectacular clouds, I felt very insignificant playing my meaningless little game. Yet, at the same time, there was a tremendous sense of peace that comes with an acceptance of ones own insignificance in the face of nature and the total humanness of frivolous pursuits in such a spectacular setting. It was as close to a mystical experience as I have ever experienced on a golf course, or anywhere.

Hip-hop heavyweight Kanye West has publically shown his support for president-elect Barack Obama ever since the senator from Illinois announced his decision to run for president earlier this year, and West is nothing but floored coming out of Obama’s victorious campaign this week. Paying tribute to the Obama campaign, West wrote the words “Hi Mom, Obama Won!” on his website’s blog, a touching move from the rapper whose mother Donda passed away less than a year ago after complications with surgery.

Other fervent Obama supporters in the hip-hop community include artists Will.i.am, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Stevie Wonder, Will Smith, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Ludacris, Common, Mos Def, Ne-Yo, Nas, Young Jeezy, the Game, Herbie Hancock, Usher and more. Chicago talk show guru Oprah Winfrey has also been a supporting figure in the Obama campaign, and she was in attendance at Grant Park in Chicago Tuesday night as Barack Obama made his historic election speech. Brad Pitt was also in the crowd, and several other public figures celebrated Obama’s victory on television programs, websites and interviews as the presidential election concluded. Kanye West’s declaration on his website was one of many, but the shout-out to his late mother was one of the most memorable notes of Obama excitement.

West, a Chicago, Illinois native, has been incredibly involved in the presidential campaign this year, but before he was dominating the music (and now, political) scene, the fresh rapper was blazing through the Midwest with his hip-hop talent and unrelenting perseverance. West first burst on the music scene in the late ’90s and early ’00s, getting his foot in the door by appearing on Jay-Z’s Blueprint album. West’s 2004 album The College Dropout was the massive success the rapper had been waiting for, and songs like “Jesus Walks” and “Slow Jamz” placed the name Kanye West among the big dogs in the hip-hop industry.

Since 2004, Kanye West has recorded and released several number ones on the Billboard charts ranging from “Gold Digger” and “Good Life” to “Stronger,” also garnering eight Grammy Awards in the wake of his musical peak. The rapper’s confident feel-good anthems have dominated radio waves and television channels for several years now, and he’s been rocking out live performances to everyone with Kanye West tickets just as long. If you haven’t heard West’s live rendition of “Stronger” in concert, head over to http://www.stubhub.com/kanye-west-tickets/ and discover the Kanye West magic for yourself.

Aside from producing some of the most powerful hip-hop music on the scene these days, West has also become a fearless public icon in the media for anything and everything he believes in. The rapper has been tapped on camera saying that George Bush doesn’t care about black people in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, also depicted as Jesus Christ on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and now his strong support for president-elect Barack Obama has earned him some time in the spotlight, as well. West is still busy performing and supporting his new album 808s & Heartbreak, and the rapper hasn’t shown any signs of a slowdown.

One of the coolest things about technology is that they make life so much easier. Technology gadgets have been evolving so quickly that sometimes, people find it hard to catch up. There are now gadgets for almost every need you can think of – portable printers, video and audio players, netbooks, and more. There are gadgets for both leisure and business.

People often travel for both leisure and business purposes. During the trip, there are often pockets of time available, and one may want to bring some useful gadgets along just to make better use of the time. For example, a flight may be delayed unexpected. A portable media player will help provide entertainment both in the airport and during the flight. Simply hook it up with your laptop and start playing a movie. So let’s consider the various gadgets that may come in useful when traveling.

Portable media players.

Portable media players provide hours and hours of entertainment. These devices usually come with huge internal disk drives (over 100GB). The disk space is to allow the owner to store as many DVD movies as possible. For a media player that has over 100GB of disk space, an estimated 50 movies can be stored.

Portable players can be used to watch movies while waiting for a flight, during a flight, in a hotel room or at a cafe.

A netbook or a laptop.

A laptop is probably the most important gadget that you can bring along. Almost all hotels provide wired or wireless Internet access these days. In the hotel room, you can always connect to the Internet and start surfing like you usually do. You can chat with friends, work on documents, download MP3 music files or stream videos.

If you are traveling purely for leisure, you can consider bringing a netbook along. A netbook operates very much like an ordinary computer, except that it’s meant for viewing content rather than creating content. You can use it to play movies, read digital books or play music. But don’t expect it to run any resource intensive software. If you need work to be done, it’s better to bring along a laptop.

Another difference between the netbook and an ordinary laptop is that the netbook is much smaller and lighter. For this reason, it is the ideal travel companion if you do not need the functions of a normal laptop.

Video eyeware.

Video eyeware is a gadget that you can wear like glasses. You can use it to play games or watch movies. It functions very much like a portable monitor, except that it’s very small and light.

This gadget has a rechargeable lithium battery that will operate for 6-8 hours. You can plug it into your iPod, media player, Play Station, Nintendo, and more. This is a great gadget for watching videos outdoors.

You may wish to consider bringing the video eyeware along and leaving your computers behind if you are traveling for leisure. Doing so will help ensure that you really relax while you are on vacation. Stop thinking about work for those few days and really let go!

Acer Aspire AS7745-7949
17 inch screen/LED 1600×900 CineCrystal
i3-370M processor (fastest of 2)
Intel HD integrated graphics card
4GB memory
2.5 hours of battery life
Blu-Disc

OR

Toshiba

15.6 Screen/ LED 1366×768 TruBrite
AMD Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile Processor N660 3.0 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache (bit slower, still fast)
ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card
4GB memory
4.5 hours battery life
Blu-Disc

Which appears to be the better deal? The acer processor is slightly faster and has a bigger screen.
The Toshiba appears to have a better graphics card and longer battery life.

Best Answer and 5 stars for input…Thanks!

The battery life on the Acer is the only thing that’s keeping me from telling you to get that
I have a 17.3 inch Inspiron and it’s great for watching stuff (from a screen size point of view)
Not the most portable thing in the world but that’s to be expected
Are you paring the same for both?
If so I’d have to go with the Toshiba
Of course the processor is gonna be smaller but other than that you get the better battery life, better portability…etc.
Wish I knew what they looked like but looks might only be important to me
Anyway what I’m saying is get the Toshiba
