Right now the water off the California coast is being effected by a major storm off of Tahiti and the waves are too big. During normal times though the waves at Malibu are just fine for body surfing. As a matter of fact there are other days when the waves, wind and weather combine to give you completely calm conditions, and on those days you can’t body surf because the waves aren’t big enough.
