“Jaws” (Peahi) is the name given to a big wave surfing reef break on the island of Maui in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is located on the northern side of the island between mile markers 13 and 14 on the Hana highway and sits at the base of rolling sugar cane field hills.

The surf break, a deep water reef break, is called “Jaws” due to the size and ferocity of the waves. The waves at “Jaws” can reach heights of 120 ft (36.6 m) on the face of the wave, moving as fast as 30 mph (48.3 km/h).

The Jaws surf break is the home of tow-in surfing and has reached its worldwide watersports fame largely due to the frequent filming and photography of tow-in surfing legends performing there on enormous ocean waves breaking at the deep reef off the shore; famed big wave surfers such as tow-in surfing pioneers (also known as “The Strapped Crew”-for the rubber straps on their short surfboards to anchor their feet against the forces) notably Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama.

In order for the surf at “Jaws” to reach its extreme heights, many specific ocean and weather conditions must prevail concurrently. Because ocean swells large enough to produce this kind of surf occur only during winter months, primarily between December and February.

Rebel Session #2

Aug-25-2011 By admin

The second of the Rebel Sessions days was called at the Dungeons, Hout Bay on Sunday in the biggest swell to hit Cape Town this winter.

On a cold, wet and blustery Sunday the big wave surfers of Cape Town congregated at the Hout Bay harbor to launch their wave runners and head out for what turned out to be an epic day of big wave surfing with a couple of rides eligible for a share of the R110 000 rebel Sessions prize money.
Having been disappointed by a swell that never reached its predicted size last weekend the eight tow in crews who took to the water this weekend weren’t going to let the wind, rain or freezing water keep them from the huge swells that were unloading at the Dungeons, and as the crews started buzzing around the backline it became clear that this was going to be a special day of surfing.

Hawaiian Eddie Aikau was the quintessential waterman. Aikau was the first lifeguard ever hired at Waimea Bay—Oahu’s premiere big wave surf spot—where he would save countless lives and earn a reputation for his fearless surfing in perilous conditions. In 1978, at age 31, Aikau was selected by the Polynesian Voyaging Society to join the crew of the Hokule’a, a replica of the ancient double-hulled canoes that discovered the Hawaiian archipelago through celestial navigation. In the dark of night, as the Hokule’a took on water and capsized, Aikau grabbed a surfboard and began paddling towards the island of Lanai to seek help for his crew. He was never seen again.

Chinese-born Mark Foo was raised in Hawaii and revered as a professional surfer in the late 70′s and 80′s. In the early 90′s, Foo focused his energy on pushing the limits of big wave surfing. In 1994, two days before Christmas, 36 year old Mark Foo drowned while surfing “Mavericks,” a deadly big wave surf spot in Half Moon Bay outside of San Francisco.

In 1997, at 28 years old, Todd Chesser was a well-known big wave surfer and regular contributing writer for surfing Magazine. He drowned on the North Shore of Oahu while surfing a spot called “Alligator Rock.”

Jay Moriarity was a prodigious big wave surfer. When Moriarity was only 16 years old, he surfed alongside Mark Foo on that fateful day that Foo died. In 2001, the 22 year old Moriarity drowned while diving in the Maldives.

Peter Davi was a big wave pioneer and third generation fisherman from Monterey, California. In 2007, Davi drowned while surfing “Ghost Tree,” a big wave surf spot off Pebble Beach, California.

Hawaii-born Andy Irons was a three time word champion surfer, big wave charger, and soon to be father when he died of cardiac arrest in November of 2010. He was 32 years old.

Hawaii-born Sion Milosky was a father of two and a dedicated big wave surfer. In 2010, he won an award for catching the biggest wave ever paddled into. In March of 2011, 17 years after the death of Mark Foo, Milosky drowned while surfing “Mavericks.”

MAY ALL OF YOU REST IN PEACE. YOU SHALL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. ALOHA.
