Generation Gap Surfing in Bali

Feb-1-2011 By admin

Dawn Breaks over Bali

Six hours earlier, the noise of waves crashing ashore had woken me from a deep sleep. Mounting excitement propelled me from the bed when I realised from the volume of sound that the waves were substantial. It was still dark, but I knew that I could catch the dawn from my suf-board if I left immediately. A while later I was several hundred metres out to sea, battling my way further out and, between soakings, watching the dawn paint the sky from a celestial palette of pinks, yellows and crimsons. I was totally alone and knew that this was not safe or sensible, but I did not care. I felt that my daring to be there gave me a kind of spiritual ownership of the place and that this feeling more than compensated me for my almost complete lack of other worldly possessions – the most valuable of which I had with me, my board. I usually love my board, but sometimes I blame it when I fall off and swear at it big-time. One of the reasons I love my surf-board is that, after I’ve blamed it for my shortcomings and sworn at it, it never holds it against me or sulks in any way. I can just jump on and ride away, as though nothing had happened.

I am now having lunch with my Dad, who has flown in from Perth, en route to a business meeting in Tokyo, to see me and presumably to try and coax me into his company – or any company at all, provided it’s not the company of surfers. He’s not had much luck at this task. Six months ago, when I was having a blast, neglecting my university studies in favour of chasing Perth surf, he tried pleading that I should pack in surfing as my Mum was worried sick that I might be eaten by a shark. This happens to a fair few surfers down-under. I felt a bit sorry for both my parents when their plan rather back-fired on them: I agreed that it wasn’t safe, quit uni and came surfing here instead. I just hope he hasn’t heard about the surfer who washed up here drowned the other month. I think a blow on the head from his board after a major wipe-out was probably the cause. I’ll probably not make an old corpse myself, but I don’t care. My Dad’s hotel, the Maya Ubud, is quite a contrast to mine. It looks like a palace compared to my lodgings, but then so does everywhere. I look again and realise that I’m not doing the Maya Ubud justice by including it with ‘everywhere’; it really is tastefully and typically Balinese, whereas mine is about as basic as you can imagine – thin mattress, fly-sheet, fan, shared cold shower.

My Dad asks me what I think of the Maya Ubud.

“It’s lovely, Dad, exquisite”.

“Wouldn’t you like to be able to afford to stay here?”

“Not really, Dad. I think that right now, at this very moment, I’m enjoying being here more than you are, because you’re used to staying in these places, whereas for me to come here and eat this fab food is a really special experience”.

I suddenly remembered that Dad gets offended when I put his values down that bluntly. I had been talking to him just as though he were one of my surf buddies. To try to make amends I quickly added “I really appreciate your coming all this way to spoil me, but honestly there’s nothing I need that I don’t already have. I really enjoy my life here. Better than that, I love my life here, because I always live in the present. Everybody knows that living in the present is the key to contentment.”

“Son, if you live in the present you’ll never achieve anything in life. In order to achieve things it’s necessary sometimes to dwell on the past and worry about the future”. I had to disagree. “I’m sorry, Dad, but I totally disagree .There’s no intrinsic meaning in achieving anything anyway, so why should I bother? I might as well live in the present and be as content as possible.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve had this conversation. My parents are so cool about my complete rejection of their value system, I really respect them, not just for their attitude about this issue, but also for all they’ve done for me in the past. Actually, there is one source of intrinsic meaning in my life – she’s called Jenny and she’s from California. In order to go and be with her in the States, I’ve realised that I’m going to need to go back to Oz and get some money together. So I discuss this with my Dad, who’s delighted.

“I wasn’t so different from you when I was your age” he said.

“Not quite so idle, but not far off it” he continued. “In those days there wasn’t a sub-culture of idleness, so people who wanted to laze about had to laze about with low-lifes. The problem these days is that civilized young blokes like you can laze about with other decent young people, so it’s much more enjoyable. “

“Your mother’s more worried about you than I am. I reckon that you’ll get bored rigid with this sooner or later. Besides, you said you were doing this to reject meaninglessness, but your life of pleasing yourself has got to be the most meaningless life imaginable. I stopped idling around when I set up home with your mother. I spent over a decade in jobs that were often rather dull, but it never really bothered me, because I knew exactly why I was doing it, I had all the meaning I could possibly have in my life, in providing for you and your sisters. So I’m not too worried, I reckon what you need is to really fall for some woman, then start imagining what you could do to make her as happy as you possibly can.”

Action Sports

Jan-30-2011 By admin

Action Sports are very popular these days and there are many types. They include sports such as Motocross racing, Surfing, Waterskiing, Parasailing, Rock Climbing and the list goes on. Here is a brief history of the beginnings of a few of the more popular Action Sports.

History of Skateboarding.

Skateboarding began in Southern California sometime in the late 40s or early 50s. Southern California has some of the most popular surfing spots in the state which attract surfers from all over the world. Even when the waves were not right the surfers wanted to be able to surf so somehow skateboarding evolved, no one really knows who built the very first skateboard, but the idea caught on and spread like wild fire. Today there are skateparks, ramp skating, trick skating and the Skateboard itself has evolved to allow skaters the ability to perform very complicated tricks and maneuvers.

History of Snowboarding.

The first Snowboard was called the Snurfer and was manufactured as a toy in 1966. I was basically a Skateboard with no wheels that you would steer with a rope. It had no bindings but would allow your boots to adhere to the board. In the early 70s a surfer developed a Snowboard called the Winterstick based on the feel of a surfboard but with the same function as skis. Through the years Snowboards and Snowboarding have increased greatly in popularity with the boards now being designed to enable Snowboards to race and perform freestyle tricks.

History of Skiing.

Skiing began as a means of travel and transportation. Sondre Norheim of Norway helped develop Skiing as Recreation and a Sport. In the mid to late 1800s lighter, thinner, cambered skis and a new stiff binding were developed which made it possible for skiers to swing, jump and maneuver turns while skiing down hill.

Some types of skiing are;

Alpine Skiing is what you do when you go to a ski resort, ride the lift and let gravity propel you down the run.

Alpine Freestyle or Jib skiing is where skiers use jumps or kicks to do aerial tricks.

Back Country Skiing or Nordic touring uses Nordic style equipment which allows skiers to ski up hill in areas where there are no chairlifts.

Cross Country Racing is one third up hill, one third downhill and one third flat.

Adaptive Skiing is done by people with physical disabilities and allows for adaptations to standard ski equipment.

Military Skiing is recreational and a means of transportation for the military, many armies train for ski warfare.

Nordic Jumping or ski flying is where skiers slide down a ramp and fly to see who can to the furthest before landing on the ground.

Nordic Skiing is the most popular style and does not require a special ski area and was developed in Scandinavia as a means of travel in winter.

Telemark skiing uses flexible ski boots that do not lock the heels into the skis which allow the skier to travel at higher speeds.

History of Cycling.

Cycling has grown in popularity over the years and throughout the world. In some countries it is a means of transportation through very narrow streets that will not allow cars to travel or countries where cars are too expensive. Cycling as a sport has increased in popularity throughout the world as well and uses bikes that are specially designed for the terrain and speeds.

Action Sports Gifts.

Action Sports are becoming more popular everyday and there are many types. They can include other sports such as Motocross racing, surfing, Waterskiing, Parasailing, Rock Climbing, 4 Wheeling, Snowmobiling, Drag Racing, Mountain Biking and more.

Some interesting gift ideas for an Action Sports enthusiast might be to decorate a small tree with Action Sports Ornaments. There are Skateboarding Ornaments, Bike Racer Ornaments, Gifts for Snowboarders, Snowboarding Ornaments and Skiing Ornaments. These are just a few of the different types of Action Sports Gifts that are available. They are sure to be a hit with any Action Sport enthusiast.

We moved away from the beach but I still have my surfboard. I want to make it into a really big skateboard. What type of wheels are good for my surfboard/skateboard.

What better way to bring together your home’s beach decor than with a coastal or tropical theme area rug? Often overlooked, floor coverings are a unique and fun way to accentuate your beach house style. These rugs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors to suit any room in your house.

When shopping for an area rug, there are several factors to take into consideration to make sure you find the perfect choice. Style, color and shape all play a crucial part in making sure your rug blends seamlessly with your beach decor. There are so many options that, with a little research, you will be sure to find something ideal to fit your needs.

Think about the room that you are decorating? What is the main concept? Do you want your room to have the feel of a surfer’s sanctuary? A tropical paradise? A coastal cottage? Your last family beach vacation? The options are limitless!

For a room with cool, laid-back surfer style, consider the ever-popular surfboard rug. Available in different sizes (“longboard” or “shortboard”), colors and patterns, these rugs could become the centerpiece of your room. If you prefer something a little more traditional, shape-wise, you can choose from plenty of rectangular-shaped surf theme area rugs.

Do you prefer your decor to have a more subdued, coastal feel? Highlight your floors with casual rugs in patterns of seashells or nautical stripes. Pair these rugs with white walls, light furniture and breezy window treatments to make your home feel like a cottage by the shore.

Depending on your taste, the color of your rugs can range from bright and splashy to understated and sophisticated, all while still maintaining your beach decor theme. Choose from vibrant floral patterns in rich reds, blues and greens for that island feeling. For a seaside retreat, choose more muted shades of aqua and tan reminiscent of sandy beaches and clear blue waters.

Area rugs are now available in all shapes and sizes. Smaller rugs are great in the bathroom or even as welcome mats at the front door. Larger rugs can be used to bring the furnishings and other accents in bigger rooms together, such as the dining room or living room. Long surfboard rugs can be used as hallway runners, and whimsical odd-shaped rugs can be a conversation piece all on their own!

So many elements go into interior design and floor coverings play an important role. You can find a great rug to match your current beach decor, or choose your rug first and then pattern your room around it. No matter what order you go in when you are decorating your beach house, remember not to leave out what’s right under your feet!

“A cool way to enjoy and be adventurous in the beach of Oahu is through surfing. However, if you are a first-timer, hitting those huge waves won’t be that easy. It’s a good thing that in Oahu, surf lessons are being provided to let tourists like you take more pleasure in experiencing the wildness of nature.

A surf camp in Oahu offers a wide variety of surfing techniques and moves, which are always demonstrated by professional surfers so that learners are properly guided.

Not knowing how and what to do when surfing is really quite embarrassing at times. This feeling, however, should not be since professional surfers also started with zero knowledge about surfing. If not for enrolling in a surf school in Oahu, they wouldn’t have learned the basic and advanced techniques of the sport. Besides, you’re doing this just for fun, right? You do not need to pressure yourself into becoming a surfing pro all at once.

Learning to surf is similar to writing for the first time. In writing, you need to know how to hold and maneuver your pen while in surfing your surfboard represents the pen. As you proceed in writing, you gradually learn the curves and lines of each letter; in surfing, the waves might seem scary at first but eventually you’ll learn how to be one with it. Surfing is almost always perceived a difficult and complicated sport in the beginning but a reputable surf school in Waikiki will teach you all you need to know so you don’t have to worry about messing up in the beach. Concentrate on the basics as you take up Surfing 101.

Aside from learning how to control the waves, taking up Waikiki surf lessons will open you to the beauty of this kind of sport. Imagine yourself standing up on your surfboard for the very first time, it’s a personal achievement, isn’t it? As you go out there to practice what you have learned in school, there will be instances you’ll fall and start all over again. Such situation should never let you down instead serve as your inspiration to do better next time. To improve yourself on surfing, don’t hesitate to ask questions and simple techniques from your trainer. Be observant and try to understand how the pros do it in preparation for your next endeavor with the waves.

If you are planning to take surfing more seriously in hope of joining a competition someday, select the right surf school so you can get an excellent training course. Choosing the right place to study in plays a big factor in honing your surfing skills. Make your surfing classes more fun by inviting your friends to enroll, too. Getting moral support from people you trust and love will surely motivate you to do your best. If you can’t seem to grasp your surfing lessons, walk up to your trainer and be honest about it. This way, he can slow down a bit and be more conscious about how far you’ve gone. Remember, there’s always room for improvement, don’t pressure yourself too much. Happy surfing!”

It’s interesting. I recently wrote a blog titled “I Want More” which was extremely deep. It really talked about the lingering yearning you feel when you meet a person you feel is the most amazing person you’ve met in a very long time.

I’ve been on a journey for the last couple years learning about self-love. Self-love is one of the most important things you can ever have, because you will never be able to truly love someone else until you learn to truly love yourself.

The reason this is true, is because until you learn to truly love yourself there will always be a wall up around you. There will always be something the prevents you from giving yourself freely to someone else.

A lot of us give of ourselves freely to our animals. Some of us become crazy cat people, while others become crazy dog people. A lot of us can give freely of ourselves to our children.

Many of us have trouble giving freely of ourselves to another adult of the opposite sex, however, because we are so caught up in protecting our emotions. Until you are able to give yourself freely to somebody, though, you will never experience love.

You actually may be able to experience some depth of love, but you’ll never experience powerful love. We all deserve to experience powerful love.

The personal journey of self-love I’ve been on has been unbelievable. What is most unbelievable about it, however, is that it all stemmed from a “Brady Bunch Greg Brady falling off my surfboard in Hawaii” moment.

I think there is an actual mark on the surfboard showing where I fell. I was truly channeling Greg Brady and his Hawaiian surfing episode: I went down in the reef, I had the tiki idol necklace around my neck, Marsha and Cindy were yelling from the beach . . . Ok, maybe not that last part. In all seriousness, though, something did happen to me in Hawaii.

Hawaii is a very spiritual place. When I was surfing in Hawaii this past summer staring at a waterfall, I noticed that if you lined up the surfboard correctly you’d be surfing directly into the waterfall and the mountains.

There is a lot of energy in Hawaii, both spiritual and emotional energy. For reasons unknown, although probably because I was trying to show off to people on the beach, I decided while surfing to jump off my board into the shallow water . . . and ever since that day my hip has been aching.

Once I went deeper into it, I realized that I was on an emotional journey to have and experience the most incredible love I ever wanted: the love of myself. I realized that until I was able to do that, I would not be able to meet and experience someone amazing.

The “I Want More” blog I wrote was all about the feelings and emotions you have for someone that are so amazing that you just constantly desire more. A man named Joe (Mr. “DarkEnergy” himself in fact) posted a comment to that blog asking me how you can tell the difference between the feeling I described in the blog and a simple “crush.”

My answer to Joe was that you want to have a crush . . . just a crush that lasts forever. That’s the magic of love. The magic of love is having a crush that lasts forever and ever, but also knowing and being able to do the necessary work to nurture that relationship to allow it to go the distance.

I want a crush that lasts forever. I want to look at someone and always think they’re the most beautiful person in the world. I want every kiss to be magical.

The only way to make that happen and to make a crush last forever, though, is to be totally conscious about the other person. You need to find someone who is effortless to be with and with whom doing the right this is easy.

The only way to make a relationship like this last is to have both of you want to make it last. You both must recognize the gifts. You both also must recognize your relationship to be comprised of two souls which connect on a deep level. Most importantly, you must have done enough work on yourself to realize that such a connection doesn’t happen every single day.

You may still have more work to do on yourself, but we all need to be working on ourselves every day. If you do and you have already found a crush, the great thing is that you have the other person to support you, accept you and embrace you for everything you are working on about yourself.

Granted, every relationship has a honeymoon phase, but I’ve seen couples who are still “ga-ga” about each other after seven or eight years. They may no longer be having sex seven days a week, but when they make love it’s still absolutely amazing. It is still so amazing because they are still making love to someone on whom they have a crush, someone with whom they’ve created a level of comfort where they know each other on every level and have given every part of themselves to each other.

So all of you should be looking to have a crush on someone, the kind of crush that lasts forever. The only way to make a crush last forever, though, is to first have a crush on yourself. Start getting a kick out of yourself. Start enjoying yourself.

More importantly, get on the same page as someone else’s soul, and let your souls connect. When two souls are connecting, you are going to have a crush . . . and a crush far greater than the kind you had at age sixteen.

Over the age of thirty, you truly know that when you find this it is a gift being presented to you that doesn’t happen every day. You are emotionally mature enough to embrace it and have fun with it.

For all of you who don’t believe in the magic of a crush, you are missing out on something. For those of you who still want to find someone on whom you have this “forever” kind of a crush, the only way to start is to first have a crush on yourself. Remember that nobody can have a crush on you unless you love yourself.

zhu zhu pet hamsters

Jan-16-2011 By admin

Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toys are the hottest toy for Christmas 2009, it is the must-have holiday toy. They are are the hottest craze among kids age of 3 or 4 and expected to be the most popular toy of the year. BUT… Zhu Zhu Pets are playing the disappearing game. As we close in for the Christmas Holiday the Zhu Zhu pet it is getting more difficult to find and expensive.

These cute robotic creatures melted many hearts, but I had a hard time this Black Friday finding any zhu zhu pets for my kids. Toys R Us had just a 100 for the lucky first in line. I was able to get one, after standing on line for about 2 hrs! I decided I’m not running around town collecting all the pets I need one by one, so I went to Amazon. Yes, of course I paid more but it was worth the peace of mind knowing my kids won’t be disappointed this Christmas Holiday.

Amazon sells Zhu Zhu pets hamster toys for well over $20. It is the best chance of still picking them up in time for the Christmas Holiday. I strongly recommend you don’t wait, especially if your child or grandchild really has their heart set on this toy.

So, you may be wondering, what exactly is the great allure? Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toys were formerly called ‘go go pets’. They are amazing toy hamsters that are an engaging and stimulating to children. These little hamster toys look like the real thing but don’t make a mess and can be ignored for as long as you want without them dying or running off. I think they are extremely popular due to the fact that, this is the world’s first innovative, realistic, interactive, plush, and artificially intelligent hamster that talks and moves around in their own play sets.

There are 5 Zoo Zoo Pets, each hamster has its own unique personality and makes whimsical sounds. The kids can’t help but just love them!

*Chunk is the laid-back surfer hamster who is famous for chillin’ out, hangin’ back and layin’ low.
*Pipsqueak she loves to play, explore, run and slide.
*Squiggles he’s a hamster on a mission: Explore Galore, then explore some more.
*Numnums her higly trained sniffer can detect a carrot from a mile away, so stand back and watch her search to find some munchies.
*Patches is the Zhu Zhu pet that is only available as part of a bundled package. The most widely available packages, includes the Funhouse or hamster House Starter Set. Patches is darker yellow in color with a large white patch on its back. Patches loves the flowers and in explore mode, goes about hunting them out. Fortunately Patches will be available in single packs starting November, and this November we will see the release of four new zhu zhu pets Jilly, Winkie, Nugget, and Scoodles.

Zhu Zhu pets are built with two modes;

* The Loving Mode which allows kids to pet them, love them, then hear them squeak and chatter back.
*The Explore Mode the pets drive around in little cars, zip up ramps and spin down slides, run in their hamster wheels, and get into all sorts of crazy situations.

Their artificial intelligence even allows them to know what room of their hamster habitat they are in.They make toilet-flushing or teeth-brushing sounds when they enter the bathroom and sleeping noises and alarm-clock sounds when they go into their bedroom.

The Zu Zu Pets Hamster Toys has multiple accessories available for purchase. Kids love to collect and connect them all to create their own customized hamster habitats.

Here are just a few of the many accessories available for purchase:

• Hamster funhouse
• Hamster wheel and tunnel
• Hamster-mobile and garage
• Spiral slide and ramp
• Adventure ball
surfboard and sleep dome
• Skateboard and U-turn
• Pet bed and blanket sets.

Anyway, if you don’t feel like hunting all over town for the Zhu Zhu Pets your kids are probably begging for, you can turn to Amazon. Wal- Mart is always sold out, but Amazon seems to have plenty of dealers selling these toys for a bit more money.

Surfing: Unaffordable Sport?

Jan-13-2011 By admin

Though surfing requires little equipment, the surfboard and the wetsuit can be expensive. The leash and the wax are not really that expensive, especially if you use them carefully and thus do not need to buy extra ones every month. However, affording the purchase of a surfboard and a wetsuit is not for everyone and thus, you will need to consider your possibilities if you are planning to start practicing this sport.

Fortunately both the surfboard and the wetsuit are long-lasting equipment. Thus, though with some effort, you can save to purchase the equipment or use some kind of financial product and pay for everything in small installments. Here are some tips that can help you get what you need to start practicing surfing without too many hassles or sacrifices.

Price Range And Savings

The price range of surfboards goes from a couple of hundreds and up to a few thousands of dollars while a surf wetsuit can cost a couple of hundreds generally with some higher price rare exceptions that can be as high as one or two thousands dollars. All in all, the whole kit can demand an average price of a thousands dollars sometimes reaching higher amounts depending on the quality of the equipment.

Saving that kind of money is not such a difficult task. Yet, all depends on your income and spending. Modifying your budget to include a small amount every month towards a savings account for the purchase of the equipment should not be such a sacrifice. Yet, if you do not have that kind of control over your finances, you may want to resort to other means.

Financing The Purchase Of Equipment

Most of the stores selling this kind of equipment will accept credit cards without ado. They may even have some promotions specially tailored for credit card purchases. Bear in mind though, that financing with credit cards is rather expensive compared to most of the other financial products. Though using a credit card may be the most comfortable and quick financial option, chances are that it will not be the cheapest one.

Most banks and financial institutions are offering unsecured personal loans for their customers every day. It may be time to take advantage of these offers. Make sure to compare interest rates first (look especially to the APR which combines all costs in one so you can easily compare). Then analyze what kind of repayment program you would benefit more of. A longer repayment program implies lower monthly payments but higher amounts spent on interests while shorter repayment programs may entail higher monthly payments but the costs of financing will be lower.

If you decide to go for an unsecured personal loan, consider including the amount necessary for taking some lessons, if you are just starting to practice this sport. It is not that costly and it can save you a lot of time and hassles.

The requirements for getting approved for an unsecured loan are not that harsh. If you are already a client of the bank or financial institution, chances are that you may have a pre-approved loan available. Otherwise you may have to show proof of employment or income and provide authorization for a short credit verification.

Kiteboarding can be land kiteboarding, kitesurfing, snowkiting (snow kiteboarding) or kiteskating (kite skateboarding). The most popular of them all is the kite surfing, although people enjoy going with the wind over the snow covered lands, oceans or just over the land.

The most popular among them all is kitesurfing or kiteboarding in an ocean or big enough river, which you move over the water, while balancing yourself on a surfboard and a large kite which you can control. The kite propels you across the water. The surfboard may or may not be attached to your shoes.

The design of the kite is becoming more sophisticated, so is the technique of staying safe while moving at a good speed over the ocean waves. The inflatable kite opens up in the air. The rider has control over the propulsion, speeding up or slowing down and controlling the course.

The history of kiteboarding runs back to 13th century Chinese invention, when they used a specially designed kite for propulsion. Kiteboarding has become a popular sport in the United States, Europe, Australia and almost all parts of the world. Much sophistication has come into the design of kites and boards, making it safer and easier for the kiteboarding enthusiasts.

Kiteboarding brings with it the best of adrenaline rush, the fun and thrills, which is not easily matched. The thrill is the same, kiteboarding fills you with the energy and passion to life. From United States to Japan, there are several dozens of locations, where you can enjoy a day of kiteboarding thrills. Some people prefer shallow waters, some prefer deep – all want wide water bodies to fully enjoy the thrills. It is only safe to avoid rocky beaches. You might also like to avoid places of risky and dangerous creatures. Kiteboarding is also allowed during the favourable seasons only and not during periods of storm. Also listen to the advice and suggestions you get while kiteboarding at such locations. This is the one entertainment and sport that keeps your adrenaline rushing. Once you are into this sport, you will feel like repeating the experience whenever you get a chance.

The ideal locations for kiteboarding are already identified by various tourism authorities and travel planners. They look for locations of wide, open shallow waters, which also have steady winds. Such locations are selected for suitability of this sport and you can also find several hotels and resorts around such areas.

For kiteboarding, you have to have the right technique, equipment and location. Without a good combination of all three, the sport is not going to be such an entertaining experience for you. Without the right technique, you risk the danger of losing your board from below your feet. With poorly designed kite, you risk losing control of your course. The wrong location can be all dangerous.

If you like adventure, make sure you include kiteboarding in your next vacation schedule. Just make sure you go to a good place with the right equipment and technique.
