But– at their core nature, what is the actual difference?

I get that EM waves are based on magnetism of electric waves; but I would like a relatable answer, not just a fact list of the specs.

I suppose I am asking how each wave is formed.

Sound waves are waves of motion within their medium. here is an example:
you and three friends are stading in a row. you shove one friend, who falls over into his friend, who in turn knocks over the next person. in this manner, motion is transferred between one particle and a neighboring particle. (note this example is extremely crude and you shouldn’t cite it.) another example: a speaker cone moves back and forth, causing the air in front of it to move back and forth along with it, which in turn affects air in front of it, and thus the sound wave propagates forward through the air.

Electromagnetic waves, however, do not need any medium to propagate. it is just basically raw energy. this raw energy can be viewed as packets, or photons, which act sort of like particles, or it can be viewed as waves which act without a medium. you should know the whole wave/particle duality thing, but aside from that, em radiation is a pretty nebulous concept. it helps if you just think of it as photons moving through space like particles, but also remember that they sometimes behave as waves. (i know, confusing, right?)

EM radiation is basically the universe’s way of conserving energy when it has no other option. when an electron drops to a lower energy state, the energy lost has to go somewhere so it ends up as a photon. not really any reason other than to conserve energy.

My natural hair and big waves here or there but I want small waves all around my head.

I’d prefer not to use heat because I’m trying to get rid of frizz.
If the length matters, I have bangs to my cheek on one side, I have bangs that reach to my shoulders and the back of my hair is in between my shoulders and the middle of my back.

You could work moisturizer into your hair and then curl sections around your finger. This would help to make little ringlets without your hair turning into a near-Afro.

Other waves like sound waves, shock waves etc? Is it just that the sound waves need a medium to travel through whereas electromagnetic waves don’t? Also, can you change the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation while its travelling and so change its property, like changing the wavelength of light to that of a microwave after it is emitted?, or does the thing it is emitted from determine its wavelength no matter what?
Thanks.

Is it just that the sound waves need a medium to travel through whereas electromagnetic waves don’t?

Precisely. That is one of the differences.

The approximate answer for the "medium" of an EM wave is the electric field and magnetic field. EM waves are disturbances varying the field value of the electric field and the magnetic field, in a double-transverse wave-like propagation.

"Also, can you change the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation while its travelling and so change its property, like changing the wavelength of light to that of a microwave after it is emitted?"

YES…there exist two methods for doing so.

Method 1: refraction.

Send the wave through an optically dense material. The wavelength decreases upon entry, and then re-increases upon exit…to compensate for the fact that the material has a slower wavespeed. Frequency doesn’t change in this case (big problem for physics), and so wavelength is the sacrificial property.

Method 2: Doppler shift

If the velocity of the source and the observer are different, there will be a shift in frequency and correspondingly wavelength to compensate. Upon approach, the frequency is blue shifted (increasing and compressing). Upon recession, the frequency is red-shifted (decreasing and expanding).

"does the thing it is emitted from determine its wavelength"

Well, actually it determines its rest frequency. How many cycles per second are disturbed of the immediate material.

Its wavelength is determined by the wavespeed of the medium…and the frequency.

Frequency RECEIVED is determined by Doppler shift and other red-shift/blue-shift phenomena.

What type of sound waves, high frequency (treble) or low frequency (bass), do you predict will diffract better around corners? Explain your answer.

Angles relevant to interference and diffraction of waves scale like the quantity:
? = ?/D

where
- ? is the wavelength
- D is a length characteristic of the physical setting (e.g., width of interference slit or spacing of diffraction grating)

So we would expect that in diffracting around a corner, the angular extent that the sound will reach, into what would be considered the "geometrical shadow" region, would be the greater, the greater the wavelength. It’s not immediately apparent what the D parameter would be; it probably depends on the detailed layout.

So: lower frequencies will do better for bending around corners.

Golfers looking for a golf holiday usually don’t think of heading north above the Arctic Circle and I have to admit golf was not the main reason for traveling to the stunning Lofoten Islands off the coast of northern Norway. But sometimes, the unexpected is the most rewarding and we were rewarded indeed with a round of golf at a beautiful and intriguing golf course.

Lofoten is a chain of small islands that are distinguished by high mountain peaks, which provide spectacular views. The craggy rocks, often covered in mist, jut out from the clear blue north Atlantic, providing a unique landscape. Dotted with small fishing villages and rugged little farms, Lofoten is a popular tourist destination in the warm summer months.

We took a flight north from Oslo, which lasted a bit over two hours, to the port city of Bodo, just above the Arctic Circle. This city is underwent a complete rebuilding after World War II, so is quite modern, with several nice new hotels that overlook the harbor. Even in early May, the sun was still quite bright at midnight and barely dusk by 2:00 A.M.

Lofoten is accessible by the coastal ferries and it is possible to walk on a ferry in Bodo, but we opted to rent a car and drive north on the mainland, loping around to access Lofoten by a shorter ferry ride from the north. We had no problem finding a nice hotel in the fishing town of Svalvaer, where the winter catch of cod fish was still out drying in the sun on huge racks, about three stories high.

The golf course in Lofoten is about a half-hour drive from Salver. At that time of year, it is possible to play at midnight or at 4:00 A.M., and one can opt to pay for a twenty-four hour day and come back at different times, rather than the typical green fee for 9 or 18 holes. Rather than disrupt our schedule, we went at the more conventional time of mid-morning and had the course to ourselves for most of our game.

There are no power carts to rent, as they would not be of much use in climbing the narrow trails through the rocks to the elevated tees. Club rental is available and once we were suitably fixed up, we struck off. The fairways were surprisingly lush but the greens struggle a bit in the harsh climate. Many of the tee boxes were back in the rocks and many of the greens were protected by natural gorse or the ocean waves. The third hole was particularly interesting with a high elevated tee, set back in the craggy rocks, requiring a shot over the ocean or beach, depending whether the tide was in or out.

Looking out over the endless vista of the ocean and the mist covered mountains, feeling the freshness of the sea air and the sun shining through the spectacular clouds, I felt very insignificant playing my meaningless little game. Yet, at the same time, there was a tremendous sense of peace that comes with an acceptance of ones own insignificance in the face of nature and the total humanness of frivolous pursuits in such a spectacular setting. It was as close to a mystical experience as I have ever experienced on a golf course, or anywhere.

Hip-hop heavyweight Kanye West has publically shown his support for president-elect Barack Obama ever since the senator from Illinois announced his decision to run for president earlier this year, and West is nothing but floored coming out of Obama’s victorious campaign this week. Paying tribute to the Obama campaign, West wrote the words “Hi Mom, Obama Won!” on his website’s blog, a touching move from the rapper whose mother Donda passed away less than a year ago after complications with surgery.

Other fervent Obama supporters in the hip-hop community include artists Will.i.am, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Stevie Wonder, Will Smith, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Ludacris, Common, Mos Def, Ne-Yo, Nas, Young Jeezy, the Game, Herbie Hancock, Usher and more. Chicago talk show guru Oprah Winfrey has also been a supporting figure in the Obama campaign, and she was in attendance at Grant Park in Chicago Tuesday night as Barack Obama made his historic election speech. Brad Pitt was also in the crowd, and several other public figures celebrated Obama’s victory on television programs, websites and interviews as the presidential election concluded. Kanye West’s declaration on his website was one of many, but the shout-out to his late mother was one of the most memorable notes of Obama excitement.

West, a Chicago, Illinois native, has been incredibly involved in the presidential campaign this year, but before he was dominating the music (and now, political) scene, the fresh rapper was blazing through the Midwest with his hip-hop talent and unrelenting perseverance. West first burst on the music scene in the late ’90s and early ’00s, getting his foot in the door by appearing on Jay-Z’s Blueprint album. West’s 2004 album The College Dropout was the massive success the rapper had been waiting for, and songs like “Jesus Walks” and “Slow Jamz” placed the name Kanye West among the big dogs in the hip-hop industry.

Since 2004, Kanye West has recorded and released several number ones on the Billboard charts ranging from “Gold Digger” and “Good Life” to “Stronger,” also garnering eight Grammy Awards in the wake of his musical peak. The rapper’s confident feel-good anthems have dominated radio waves and television channels for several years now, and he’s been rocking out live performances to everyone with Kanye West tickets just as long. If you haven’t heard West’s live rendition of “Stronger” in concert, head over to http://www.stubhub.com/kanye-west-tickets/ and discover the Kanye West magic for yourself.

Aside from producing some of the most powerful hip-hop music on the scene these days, West has also become a fearless public icon in the media for anything and everything he believes in. The rapper has been tapped on camera saying that George Bush doesn’t care about black people in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, also depicted as Jesus Christ on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and now his strong support for president-elect Barack Obama has earned him some time in the spotlight, as well. West is still busy performing and supporting his new album 808s & Heartbreak, and the rapper hasn’t shown any signs of a slowdown.

We are experiencing a credit crunch. Or at least, many people are buying into that reality. But I don’t.

Am I rich? My family love to think so, and because they do, they help me to create abundance by thinking of my abundance all the time. And I am not going to stop them. There will come a day, soon, when all their thoughts about my abundance and my own creation of abundance will result in physical abundance. I will thank them for their share in the process, but I will not stop their thoughts at the moment – let them work with me. So how does the credit crunch affect me?

I look at it with awe and wonder. I see the perfection of the Universe that we live in and I get a greater understanding of how things fit together.

I recently learned about Elliott waves. I can only describe these Elliott waves as the pulse of the Universe. Imagine a wave zig-zagging its way upwards. It moves up ten paces, then recedes seven paces, then moves up ten paces, then recede six paces, and so on. When you are riding the wave without realising it, you feel the exhilaration of moving up, and the fear of moving down.

Most of the time when you move up, the exhilaration is dampened by the expectation of moving down again. When you move down, your expectations are confirmed, and you desperately hope that there will be another move upwards. When the upward move comes again, your major emotion is a relief that the fear can now go, rather than gratitude and awe at moving up again.

Riding the wave is in many ways worse than riding a rollercoaster, because at least with a rollercoaster you know that it will end at some stage, and you will feel solid earth under your feet again. You know that when you go down upside down, you will not fall on your face, because you are strapped in safely. And at some point you will go down and stay down and leave the rollercoaster with wobbly legs. You know (fingers crossed) that the rollercoaster is safe, otherwise the owner would not have sold the tickets. And you know that you get onto the rollercoaster because you chose to do so and you know that the risk is minimal.

However, riding the wave of the Universe is not nearly so “safe”. You do not buy a ticket, because by the time you realise that you are part of the wave, it is too late and you are born into this existence.

When you focus entirely on riding the wave, you love the bits where you go up, because it feels good to know that you can do that. The waves that take you down are really scary. When you go down, you get that sinking feeling in your stomach and you have nothing to hold onto. You do not know where the wave will stop, and therefore you cannot prepare for the stop. Will you fall flat on your face? No, never. The reason for this is that the wave always turns and moves up again. You can continue to ride the wave and simply stay in until you hit the next wave up, which is what most people do. They talk about the credit crunch with apprehension in their voices. They prepare for the fall and meanwhile cling to the wave as if it is the only real thing in the world. And because they prepare for the fall, that is what they get – that is how the Law of Attraction works.

When you become aware of the wave that you ride, things change. Suddenly you can distance yourself from riding the wave while doing it – like driving a car on a busy road while having a conversation with a child about bullies at school. If someone subsequently asks you why you slowed down at a particular point and changed lanes, you will probably not remember that you had to slow down to wait for oncoming traffic and then change lanes to get past another slow vehicle. But you will recall everything about the conversation with the child, even when driving a car requires much more attention and skill than talking to a child.

When you become aware that the wave is there, you stop riding the wave blindly. You start to ride the wave with intention.

You start to notice the waves that go up, and you know that they will turn down at some point, and you prepare for the downturns with anticipation rather than fear. You start to notice the waves that go down, and you know that they will at some stage turn, and that is a good place to tap into the energy of the rising wave.

At the moment we are at the bottom of one of these Elliott waves – the stock market, the banks and the economic downturn confirms this.

People react to this in two ways. The majority of people live in fear and trepidation and are preparing to lose money, jobs, homes, self-esteem, hope, and so on. Whatever happens next will confirm their expectations. They will walk away with nothing and not even notice when the wave turns up again, because they will still be clinging to the wave in fear. Nothing will change their views.

Then there is a minority of people that have become aware of the waves, and that are aware that we are at the bottom of a wave now. They are preparing to focus on the energy of the upturn and they are putting everything in their lives in place so that they can focus 100% when the upturn starts. For these people it does not matter if the upturn is a small wave, because they will understand a small wave is part of a much bigger wave. Their mindset rather than the size of the wave will determine their fortunes. They are the “lucky” ones – the ones that open a business or win the lottery during a recession and seem to turn everything they touch into gold. I have decided long ago to be part of this group, and I am now reaping the benefits, with loads of opportunities coming my way.

As for everyone around me, my question is: what will I do during a recession? The difference is that I need to list the opportunities that suddenly abound, and prioritise them. Then I need to focus on one after the other, and live my destiny. These opportunities have come for me at the end of a cycle, which is also the beginning of a much larger cycle, and I love it.

Do I take opportunities away from others?

A man called Foster Hibbard tells the tale of the two men that went down to the ocean, one with a teaspoon, the other with a bucket. Each of them took away the amount of water he chose to take away. The ocean doesn’t care how much water they take away, because there is plenty wanter. I chose to go down to the ocean with a tanker truck – or maybe a fleet, to get my share. Will there be some water left for you in the ocean? Of course. That is called abundance, and it is infinite. The limits that exist, are in our minds because we do not understand what infinity means.

How will you benefit from the credit crunch?

Predicting what will happen in the Foreign Exchange market can prove to be a difficult yet necessary task. If you are successful in predicting what will happen in the forex market then you will surely make some cash. With that in mind, there are a number of different tools which you can use in order to try and accurately predict this financial market. These are essential skills that any trader should hone even before they start to trade.

One particular tool in trying to predict the market which is becoming quite popular is the forex charts. These charts show the movements of the market in the past and using the concept that history would repeat itself, the trader would try and predict what will happen tomorrow based on yesterday. It is said that the market movements shown in charts look like waves and that these waves move in repetitive patters; this is called the Elliot Wave Theory.

Basically what the Elliot Wave Theory suggests is that there are eight waves; the first five are called impulse waves which happen due to impulsive purchasing of traders and the last three are called corrective waves. Basically what happens in the first five waves is a gradual climb or descent and this is put back into place by the last three waves.

This can help any trader understand the movements of the market even more; and with more knowledge and skill a trader can improve his or her accuracy when it comes to predicting the forex market.
