Its about skill and comfort level. You have to push that comfort level but dont make the jumps to big. If you surf two foot waves now try going out in 4 foot waves. When you are cool with that go out it 5 or 6 foot waves then 8 foot waves and so on. Also go with a friend when you are pushing it. Its alwasy good to have someone to watch your back.

Whatever you're not comfortable with is too big. Practice makes perfect though and if you want to try the big waves you gotta challenge yourself and practice, but dint be crazy about it. Use your noggin have fun and good luck!
