I have heard that you can use Greyhound to ship stuff like boards. As long as it is packaged well it should arrive okay. Why not just buy one closer to home? Go to SF or down to Santa Cruz.
References :
i shipped a board using ups a few years ago and i think it was like 100 bucks for a 8 ft board in an 8 6 board back with lots of padding around the rails and decent padding on the deck. the box got pretty banged up but the board came through unscathed. if all else fails insure your shipment against damage, if the board arrives in 1000 pieces make the company buy you a new one
