Surfer Mike Parson’s tow-in surfing a 65 foot wave at Jaws (Peahi) on Maui, Hawaii in January 2002. Cinematography by Peter Fuszard. If this year’s Billabong XXL Awards are any indication, waves aren’t the only things getting bigger. The known big-wave universe is growing as well. In addition to familiar big waves such as Maverick’s and Todos Santos, XXL finalists have come in from spots that weren’t even known about a decade ago, like Ghost Tree in Monterey, Shipstern’s bluff in Tasmania or Playa Gris in Spain.
