The Wedge Newport Beach Balboa Island body surfing. Big waves for the day.
Please note. These waves look fun but this is not a place for amateurs or even intermediate body surfers.
This was shot on September 2nd 2011 and is a short look at “The Wedge” in Newport Beach when the swell is up. Shot on a Canon XF-300. The day was rather hazy so the shots are a little flat and not corrected…but you get the point. Have fun watching.

Peahi aka. Jaws – The Biggest Wave on Earth
“Jaws” (Peahi) is the name given to a big wave surfing reef break on the island of Maui in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is located on the northern side of the island between mile markers 13 and 14 on the Hana highway and sits at the base of rolling sugar cane field hills.
The surf break, a deep water reef break, is called “Jaws” due to the size and ferocity of the waves. The waves at “Jaws” can reach heights of 120 ft (36.6 m) on the face of the wave, moving as fast as 30 mph (48.3 km/h).
The Jaws surf break is the home of tow-in surfing and has reached its worldwide watersports fame largely due to the frequent filming and photography of tow-in surfing legends performing there on enormous ocean waves breaking at the deep reef off the shore; famed big wave surfers such as tow-in surfing pioneers (also known as “The Strapped Crew”-for the rubber straps on their short surfboards to anchor their feet against the forces) notably Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama.
In order for the surf at “Jaws” to reach its extreme heights, many specific ocean and weather conditions must prevail concurrently. Because ocean swells large enough to produce this kind of surf occur only during winter months, primarily between December and February.

BIG WAVE AWARDS 2010/11 SLAB NOMINEE Chris Ross
The Right, WA. Video credit: Ben Rufus
After a hectic season of charging and a weeklong wait at the hands of the judging panel, the finalists in surfing Life’s Oakley Big Wave Awards will find out at 9pm tomorrow night whether they walk away victorious with a share of the $35,000 prize pool.
Biggest Wave, Biggest Slab, and Biggest Paddle-In categories have been decided upon and the countdown to Thursday’s gala presentation evening at the Bondi Openair Pavilion has begun.
With 300 strong crowd, including a who’s who of the surf and media industry, and a grand total of $35,000 up for grabs across the three categories, finalists would be forgiven for feeling a little nervous.
Huge, crazy rides have been thrown into the mix from renowned big-wave stars, pitched up against colossal waves charged by unknown country kids, lifeguards from Tasmania, veteran Western Australian watermen, and one of the nation’s top junior pro surfers.
The Awards, now in their ninth year, have come to highlight a side of surfing that’s way beyond both the recreational mainstream and the professional competitive arena — a zone where seemingly normal people take seemingly outlandish risks, and achieve huge things with seemingly little concern for fame or renown — Surfing Life and Oakley reward their spectacular achievements.
A comprehensive press release and wrap of the awards outcome, along with high resolution images and video of the winning rides will be available shortly after the event’s conclusion.
Stay tuned to www.surfinglife.com.au for up-to-date news, post-event images and video.
